Fei Niao Die Xue (飛鳥跌穴): The Flying Bird Falls Into the Nest

Some auspicious formations reward the bold move. This one rewards something different — being in the right position.

A bird has been circling for a long time. Then, in one motion, it folds its wings and drops — landing precisely in its own nest. That is Fei Niao Die Xue (飛鳥跌穴), "the Flying Bird Falls Into the Nest": the moment wealth and opportunity stop needing to be chased, because they have found their landing spot — and the landing spot is you. Among the hundreds of named patterns in Qi Men, classical texts place it at the very top of the auspicious list, side by side with Qing Long Fan Shou.

Here is what builds it, what it actually promises, and how to catch it when it shows up in your chart.

What Triggers It

The trigger mirrors its famous sister: Wu (戊) on the heaven plate lands on Bing (丙) on the earth plate — written in chart shorthand as 戊+丙.

Two stems, the same two roles as before — with their positions swapped:

• Bing (丙) is the fire stem among the three nobles (三奇), the fire of full daylight. It stands for power, visibility, concentrated energy — this time it sits below, as the nest.
• Wu (戊) leads the six ceremonial stems (六儀). It stands for wealth, capital, the thing of value — this time it is above, the bird coming down.

Value descends from the sky and lands exactly where the energy is strongest. The bird does not miss; the nest is not empty. The thing of value arrives where it belongs — which is why the classics call it "falling into the nest."

What It Means

Qing Long Fan Shou's classical verdict is "for action, greatly favorable" — it pushes you to move. Fei Niao Die Xue's verdict has a different texture: 百事洽和 — "all matters settle in harmony."

Settle, as in water finding its channel. Harmony, as in the parts clicking into place. You are not pushing the matter forward; the matter is walking toward you.

In modern readings, Fei Niao Die Xue signals:

• Opportunity at the door — the offer arrives unprompted, the client asks for you by name, the other side speaks first
• Resources landing — the payment, approval, or slot you have been waiting for settles at exactly this node
• Being chosen — interviews, bids, and competitions tilt your way
• Unexpected gains — windfalls outside the plan, often traced back to seeds you planted earlier

The formation is strongest for receiving: awaiting a result, fielding an offer, letting the other party name their price, holding steady in a passive position. If your question is "will this come through?", the answer this formation gives is: yes — and it will come to you.

Fei Niao Die Xue vs Qing Long Fan Shou: The Mirror Pair

Flip the two stems and you get the sister formation:

Both are elite formations built from the same two stems. The practical difference is who moves first. Under Qing Long Fan Shou, you act and the world responds. When the Nest Needs Checking

No formation is read alone. Fei Niao Die Xue at full strength wants a clean palace — ideally with one of the three lucky doors (Open 開, Rest 休, Life 生). Check the same palace for:

• Door suppression (門迫) — the opportunity is real but arrives with turbulence; expect friction before you can catch it
• Tomb (入墓) — the bird has reached the nest but stays hidden; the result is delayed, often until timing opens the tomb
• Clash (擊刑) — you can catch it, but a cost or dispute comes attached

None of these cancel the formation. They change the reading from "sit back and receive" to "stay ready, eyes open." 1. Identify the palace. The direction and life-area of that palace is where the opportunity is descending.
2. Check your use-god. If your day stem (you) sits in or is fed by that palace, the bird is flying straight at your question.
